AirAsia to switch medium-haul routes to AirAsia X
AirAsia Group's strategic decision to transfer select medium-haul routes from its AirAsia unit to AirAsia X marks a significant shift in its operational focus. Tony Fernandes, the Group's CEO, confirmed via social media that routes exceeding four hours will be transitioned to the long-haul carrier, AirAsia X, citing their maturity as a key factor. This move is aimed at optimizing capacity allocation, allowing AirAsia to concentrate on its more lucrative short-haul routes.
Routes affected by this transition include those from Malaysia to destinations in India, China, Taiwan, Macau, the Philippines, Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Hong Kong Chek Lap Kok. AirAsia X, equipped with a fleet of twenty-two A330-300s, already serves a diverse range of destinations spanning Australia, Taiwan, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, China, and Indonesia.
Despite the anticipated growth for AirAsia X, Fernandes reiterated the Group's stance on not resuming flights to Europe, stating that the long-haul market is not yet conducive for such operations. Firmly focused on medium-haul routes, the Group remains uninterested in expanding to European destinations such as Berlin and London. This strategic decision underscores AirAsia's commitment to maximizing efficiency and profitability within its chosen operational scope.
